Bananagrams

Everyone builds their own word grid at the same time – Scrabble without the board, but with speed.

age 7+1–8 playersapprox. 15 min.

How it plays

All players draw letter tiles and simultaneously (!) build their own crossword grid. Whoever uses up all their tiles shouts "Peel!" – and everyone must draw a new tile and work it in. Useless letters can be traded for three new ones. First player to finish with the pool empty wins.

What it trains

Bananagrams trains spelling and word retrieval under time pressure – and above all flexible restructuring: every new letter can call half the grid into question. Since everyone builds their own grid, there is no waiting; weaker readers compete on equal terms with simple, short words.

Community voices: A worldwide bestseller; the pace and zero downtime earn praise. Teachers like using it for vocabulary work. One critical note: with big skill gaps you need handicaps, or the younger players get frustrated.
Our tip for parents: With beginning readers, play cooperatively: build one big word grid together.

Especially good for

  • Reading kids from 2nd–3rd grade
  • Families who find Scrabble too slow
  • Travel: everything fits in the fabric banana

Less suitable for

  • Beginning readers in competitive mode – play cooperatively instead
  • Anyone who prefers contemplative word games
